Spring Bulb Planting Cath Cobb Woods Sat 26th October 2024 10.00am -12.00pm
16 volunteers joined Rhodri the Park Ranger for a busy morning in the lovely autumn sunshine.
We planted around 300 Tenby Daffodils, 100 Snakes Head Fritillary, 200 Wood Anemone and 100 Wild Garlic bulbs to increase the ground flora here in our Ancient Woodlands.
We also cut back lots of bramble across the area and around the gated entrance, making it easier for people to access and walk through. We raked the vegetation that was cut today and previously cut by the park rangers, used pitchforks to carry it all away to create a big habitat pile. This will be great for insects, mammals and birds, and will eventually rot down.
This glade area will need continued management to help keep the bramble at bay so all these woodland flowers that we planted today, and previously this year, can flourish. We were joined by singing Robin's throughout the morning and heard Goldfinches too.
We did a bit of fungi and slime spotting on the beautiful oak tree that sits in the middle of our glade. We found lots of tiny fungi of the Mycena family, some Purple Jelly Dots and Crystal Brain. Very fascinating.
It is the season for fungi so it's always worth having a look around as there are so many varieties to find. We also spotted some Candlesnuff Fungus and Cobalt Crust on fallen rotting branches.
We're so lucky to have this Ancient Woodland on our doorstep and we've made a positive impact here today.
Thank you to our Councillors Michael and Chris for joining us, it's great to have their support. We can't wait to see these flowers in bloom in springtime.
