Hendre Lake Fish

Hendre lake is 40,000 square metres in size and 2m deep in some parts. The island bay areas are a favourite habitat for Carp, a gravel bar on the railway side provides a habitat for plants and many silver fish especially Bream .

Tench

The tench is a medium-sized, heavy, deep-bodied fish. It can be found in soft-bottomed lakes and in slow-flowing rivers with plenty of vegetation. Tench are quite shy fish, hiding among dense weed. They feed on invertebrates, including pond snails and small pea mussels.

Roach

The roach is a small to medium-sized fish. It is a member of the carp family and has the typical carp shape. It is found in large ponds, lakes and slow-flowing rivers. One of the most common fish in lakes, roach often gather in large shoals in shaded areas. They are omnivorous, feeding on invertebrates, fish eggs, plants and seeds.

Perch

The perch is a medium-sized fish with a characteristic humped shape. A predator, the perch feeds on invertebrates, crayfish and other fish. It lives in large ponds, lakes, reservoirs, canals and lowland rivers, and is often seen in shoals.

Pike

The pike is a large fish that can grow over a metre in length. It is found in lakes and slow-flowing rivers and canals that have a lot of vegetation. It uses these plants as hiding places when hunting, bursting out with remarkable speed to catch fish, frogs, small mammals or ducklings. Young pike are called 'jack' and will eat small fish and invertebrates.

Bream

The bream is a medium-sized fish and a member of the carp family, so displays the typical carp shape. It is a bottom-feeding fish that preys on worms, snails and pea mussels. It lives in large ponds, lakes and slow-moving rivers where it congregates in quite large shoals.

Common Carp

The common carp is a large, heavy, deep-bodied fish that grows up to a metre in length. Carp are omnivorous, feeding on plants, algae, invertebrates and other fish; one favourite food is freshwater mussels, which they will eat whole with their shells still on. They live in weedy ponds, flooded gravel pits and lakes.
