The wetland areas are home to around 20 different species of dragonfly and damselfly.
 

These wetland insects are  fearsome predators of flying insects like gnats &  mosquitos . With a top speed of 30mph, dragonflies are one of the fastest insects in the UK

The UK's smallest hawker, the Hairy dragonfly  has a distinctive

 hairy thorax

Emporor Dragonfly

​

 Britain’s largest species of dragonfly, extremely active and distinctively flies with its tail slightly held down. 

​

Four-spotted Chaser Dragonfly

 

Medium-sized fairly broad-bodied dragonfly with two dark spots on the leading edge of each wing

Ruddy Darter Dragonfly

 

The  Ruddy darter so called because of the red colour of mature males and the rapid flight habit ​

Migrant Hawker Dragonfly
 

The migrant hawker  is one of the smaller species of hawker dragonflies. Breeds in standing water but may be found well away from water along hedgerows or woodland edges. 

Common Darter Dragonfly

 

​Medium size dragonfly with a narrow body. Often the last species to be seen in the year, taking flight as late as November.
